About the Data Storage Converter

Digital storage units quantify computer memory, cloud storage limits, hard drive capacities, network bandwidth, and download file sizes across decimal (SI 1000) and binary (IEC 1024) standards.

How to Use the Data Storage Converter

  1. 1Enter the numerical data size.
  2. 2Select whether you are calculating using Decimal Standard (Base 10: 1000 bytes) or Binary Standard (Base 2: 1024 bytes).
  3. 3Choose your source and target data units.
  4. 4Instantly view your converted file size and full unit matrix.

How It Works & Underlying Logic

Computers use binary architecture (powers of 2, 1024 bytes per KiB), while drive manufacturers market storage in decimal powers of 10 (1000 bytes per KB). The tool converts seamlessly between both conventions.

Mathematical Formula / Rule1 Byte = 8 Bits | Binary: 1 KiB = 1,024 Bytes, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB | Decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 Bytes

Practical Calculation Examples

Gigabytes to Megabytes

Converting a 16 GB USB flash drive capacity to MB

Input: 16 GB (Base 1024) to MB
Output: 16,384 MB

Terabytes to Gigabytes

Converting a 2 TB hard drive to GB

Input: 2 TB (Base 1000) to GB
Output: 2,000 GB (or 1,862.6 GiB in binary)

Helpful Tips & Best Practices

  • Drive capacity differences (e.g. why a 1 TB hard drive shows as ~931 GB in Windows) are due to the difference between decimal marketing (1000³) and Windows binary calculation (1024³).
  • Network download speeds are measured in Megabits per second (Mbps), while files are measured in Megabytes (MB). Divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s.

Data Storage Converter FAQ

In standard decimal SI, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. In binary (MiB), 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes.
